Kodaikanal literally translates to ‘The gift of the forest’.When i first heard of Kodaikanal i wasn’t sure what it was going to be like, infact when a friend mentioned how beautiful it was i was a bit skeptical; i thought if it were so beautiful how come we haven’t heard about it before this? How come a place as beautiful as a dream was still so unheard of? A few minutes into this gorgeous town and all my skepticism vanished! It is what they call it, the ‘Princess of Hill stations‘! Located in the hills of Dindigul district,Tamil Nadu this place is a must visit for any nature lover infact it is a must visit for everyone; it will take you back in time with its old-world charm, its scenic beauty is almost unparalleled, the crisp freshness in its air, the salubrious weather and magnificent sceneries are something you cannot afford to miss.

1. Berijam lake
This is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kodaikanal the lake has pristine water and is situated inside a dense forest cover, you have to go through a 15-20 min drive to get to it, but every minute of that ride is incredible to say the least. Captivating views line the whole route, Any animal lovers may rejoice as it is a wild life sanctuary too! And if lucky you could come across many animals living in their natural habitat.
(Tip: To get here you have to reach Moir Point and get your tickets from the forest checkpost just adjacent to the Moir Point. They have a bus service which covers multiple points on its way to Berijam lake, they let you stay at the lake for an hour and take you back. The tickets cost just 100/- I would advice taking this bus as the road is pretty risky to drive on your own, Although allowed you have to take permission from the forest department to take your own vehicle inside.)
2. Silver Cascade Falls
The first attraction unfolding before your eyes while getting to Kodaiknal via Kodaikanal ghat road is the silver Cascade Falls, formed due to the overflowing from the kodaikanal lake this stunning waterfall is almost 180 feet in height. The fall gets its name from the water being so pure and clean that it looks almost silver. This is a perfect spot to take a break during your journey.The climate is absolutely refreshing and so are the fruits available around the falls.
3. Kodaikanal Lake
A man made lake situated in the centre of the town is an absolute must visit spot in Kodaikanal. Surrounded by several gorgeous species of flowers and trees this star shaped lake offers a variety of things to do, you can choose to either boat through the beautiful blue waters and enjoy the sun rays making the water glitter or take a walk around the lake enjoying the beautiful variety of flora or even better go cycling around the lake, it is a must have experience that takes you away into an old timely feel.
(Tip: Go cycling early morning as there is no traffic or much crowd and the climate is ever more beautiful.)
4. Coakers Walk
Imagine walking through the clouds and looking down upon mesmerising views of hills, lush greenery for as far as your eyes can see and a climate just perfectly cold and refreshing; a stroll on Coalkers walk will actually be just that! You could choose to either walk or cycle through the one kilometer walk created along the edge of the mountain so as to give a breathtaking view of the lush green valleys and hills of Kodaikanal. This is one thing that you cannot afford to miss on your visit to Kodaikanal. And ya! dont forget to eat the pineapples avaible with the vendors on the walk, they just like the views are out-of-this-world-kinda-delicious!
5. Vattakanal Falls
Vattakanal Falls is a small and beautiful waterfall situated inside a gorgeous forest. Getting to the falls involves a small trek through the forest, which adds to the fun involved in going to this point. The main falls are a treat to the eyes, a small cool water pool gets formed at the base of the falls for you to take a dip and enjoy.
(Tip: A must visit foodstall near this place is the ‘Belem Cafe’, a small roadside stall that serves delicious fusion food and is located at a very scenic spot.)
6. Kodaikanal Solar Observatory
The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory is owned and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.Those with the passion to see the stars can visit the solar observatory at night givent that the sky is clear. The obsevatory premises includes a museum which is pretty decent if not great, the museum has a real time display projecting sunspots on a screen, a display of the refraction of light into the rainbow of colors and the movement of clouds shown on a screen through a telescope. The museum also has a lot of information on astronomy displayed through posters and videos.
(Tip: You have to take special permission to visit the observatory at night.)
7. Bryant Park
Located between Kodaikanal lake and coakers walk, Bryant park offers a completely distinct view from both these places. A Beautifully landscaped garden, Bryant park is essentially a botanical garden and has a huge variety of floral plants. A walk in this garden is like a walk through a flower rainbow! You can enjoy a nice picnic under a tree and watch these beautiful flowers sway with the wind. Another attraction of this park is the ‘Glass House’ which comprises a wide assortment of flowers,ferns,cacti and other ornamental plants.
8. Mathikettan shola view
On your way to Berijam Lake comes a point called the ‘Mathikettan shola view’ ; this is one of the sights included in the bus tours provided by the forest department. The view from this point is of a valley full of an aryurvedic medicinal tree plantation that has been growing for the last 400 years, glorious, magnifient, and breathtaking are the only words that can define this view. Dont forget to make a stop at this point when visiting Berijam Lake.
9. Pillar Rocks
One of the most popular tourist spots in kodaikanal, Pillar Rocks is one of natures most magnificient wonders.The three huge granite boulders sttanding shoulder to shoulder at a height of about 400 feet admist clouds is a view you cannot miss. The chamber between two pillars is called the ‘Devil’s Kitchen’,and is another tourist spot of this area.You might want to check with the climate as this point is not visible if the fog is too thick.
10. Pine forest
A 10 min drive from Moir point the Pine forest is also one of the most famous tourist spots in Kodaikanal. Magnificient pine trees create an altogether different world inside the forest, when entering the forest you literally walk in from the normal world and into a romantic bollywood song. Due to its mesmerising beauty created by the densely growing pine trees this place is an ideal spot for photography, a lot of movies have been shot here.
